This workshop used drawing as a decolonizing tool and a means of envisioning public space, shaping it in accordance with the stories of resistance within the city, particularly in the Rego neighbourhood. The starting point was a pre-existing drawing depicting a judoka fighting against the Marquês de Pombal (the Great Architect), leading to an informed and critical reflection on the neighbourhood’s public space in relation to the rest of the city.

Márcio Carvalho's artistic and research work stems from various technologies and practices related to autobiographical and collective remembering. He investigates how they influence the memorial construction of past events. He uses art as a tool to examine representative memories embedded in different urban and private environments, particularly those that still commemorate colonialism and imperialism. Through his work, he proposes collective imaginings and participatory strategies for contextualizing colonial worship objects scattered throughout the city, aiming to facilitate encounters with alternative stories and to reconsider the role that heritage and commemoration can and/or should play in a post-colonial violence era.
