In the records of Filho da Mãe (Rui Carvalho) there are confident and well-defined stories with clear realisations in the paths he decides to take. The way he affirms his guitar and the language he performs arises, however, from a strangeness towards the locations where he decides to record. It has been like this from the very beginning, with “Palácio” (2011), an album recorded at the home of his friend and companion in the band If Lucy Fell, Makoto Yagyu; then in “Cabeça” (2013), between Montemor-o-Novo and Gerês; or when he went to Amares to settle the ideas for “Mergulho” (2016) at the Santo André de Rendufe monastery. His latest record, “Água-Má” (2018), follows in this tradition: between Lisbon and the Madeira islands, where he stayed a week in residency. A title that is synonymous with jellyfish – the tentacles of the aquatic creature might serve as analogy for Filho da Mãe's guitar strumming, or the creature's transparency as a reference to the limpid and lucid nature of the compositions he presents here.
