TRKZ is the stage name of Ailton José Matavela, a Mozambican musician, interpreter, and producer who explores a hybrid musical genre that wanders through various rhythms but whose lyrics always keep to social and protest concerns. In 2018 Matabela used this idea of protest song to create “Continuadores”, a hybrid project, at once musical and audiovisual, worked in partnership with Tiago Correia-Paulo and created in the context of a shared artist residency, that contemplates nostalgia for the genesis of Mozambique as an independent nation and drinks from the ideological orientation of Samora Machel, the first Mozambican president, who defended that music, theatre, and the arts should be a pillar for the country's growth. In the same year he also teamed up with the artists May Mbira and Nandele Maguni to create a project that brings together electronic music and Mozambican traditional rhythms, paying tribute to the producers and beatmakers who marked a new generation of Mozambican music known as “Pandza/Dzukuta”. He is currently promoting his most recent album, “Storytellers”: a work that marks TRKZ's development as a multi-instrumentalist and music producer.
