After 15 years playing as a busker in the Paris Métro, the gravelly voice of the Algerian singer Mohamed Lamouri, as well as the dynamic melodies of his synthesiser, are now being heard all around the world. His album “Underground Raï Love” celebrates his close relationship with the Algerian traditional folk music – raï –, a music genre often exploring social and political issues. In Algeria, the more traditional factions have often tried to stifle the genre. Despite being affected by these facts, Lamouri doesn't hide and openly embraces the close relationship between the genesis of his work and raï music. His references go beyond Algerian folk music, stretching all the way to groove steady, beats, funk, or Sahara blues, with adaptations of the pop songs “Hotel California”, by the Eagles, or “Billie Jean”, by Michael Jackson. But his greatest musical idol is still Cheb Hasni, the popular raï singer who was murdered in 1994.
