There is a treatment that prevents the transmission of HIV in over 90% of the cases – it is called PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis). In 2018, the Portuguese state launched an experimental project for 100 people, meanwhile extended to those who are eligible, and the commercialisation of a generic was authorised. However, the community associations engaged in the struggle against HIV have denounced the delay in the scheduling of medical appointments in the National Health Service and demand faster and closer ways of access and distribution of the medicine. New infection rates in Portugal are still some of the highest in the European Union. The majority of new cases diagnosed refer to males, amongst men who have sex with men. 79.8% of these are between the ages of 15 and 29. If preventing new infections is a priority, then why is the state not producing this antiretroviral?
