Herberto Smith is a photographer and cultural activist. He was born in Guinea-Bissau, grew up in São Tomé and Príncipe and currently lives in Lisbon, Portugal. Today he focuses his attention on the quotidian life of youths of African descent (African diaspora) in Lisbon. Capturing fragments of everyday life, he reproduces the narratives of those who are rarely reflected in traditional media outlets, reminding us that these experiences are universal and relatable the world over. His aim is to explore issues affecting the culture of youths of African descent: identity, racial perceptions, social and economic inequalities, and social inclusion. His approach takes on a collaborative component, where the outcome does not intend to represent reality, but captures moments of mutual sharing that encapsulate moods, sensibilities, and aspirations.
