This Herberto Smith workshop at Quinta do
Lavrado put the participants in contact with the basic knowledge of digital
photography and involved them in practices that stimulated the ability to tell
stories. Stories that started from the closest and most personal point of view
and then expanded to a wider universe. By creating these narratives, we validate
our experiences, our feelings and the feelings of those around us. We offer new
perspectives and enrich the collective imagination. We put ourselves on the map
and show ourselves to the world.
Bio
Herberto Smith is a photographer and cultural
activist. He was born in Guinea-Bissau, grew up in São Tomé and Príncipe and currently lives in Lisbon, Portugal. Today he focuses his
attention on the everyday life of youths of African descent (African diaspora)
in Lisbon. Capturing fragments of everyday life, he reproduces the narratives
of those who are rarely reflected in traditional media outlets. His aim is to
explore issues affecting the culture of youths of African descent: identity,
racial perceptions, social and economic inequalities, and social inclusion. His
approach takes on a collaborative component, where the outcome does not intend
to represent reality, but captures moments of mutual sharing that encapsulate
moods, sensibilities, and aspirations.
