Born in 1978 in Portugal to a Cape Verdean mother and an Angolan father, Francisco Vidal has been exploring various mediums in his work, including painting, drawing and installation, the result of a meticulous and continued reflection on the discursive possibilities of plastic and aesthetic expression in the relationship with the societies and current events of Portugal and Angola. His work is imbued with a historical and political connotation, exploring subjects such as the African diaspora, cultural and identitarian miscegenation, and transcultural currents. He studied sculpture at ESAD, Caldas da Rainha (Portugal), and obtained his master's degree from Columbia University School of the Arts, New York (USA). He was one of the representatives of Angola at the 56th Venice Biennale (2015), and has been dividing his time between the former country and Portugal. He has been exhibiting regularly since 2005 in both solo and group shows, and is represented in several renowned public and private collections, including the EDP Foundation Collection, PLMJ Foundation, Sindika Dokolo Collection and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
