Fado Bicha is Lila Fadista and João Caçador. The project created in 2017 seeks, through fado – Portugal's quintessential national song – to bring to light stories of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex community. Their fados – often the classics changed in order to include the LGBTI reality – have swapped the Portuguese guitar for an electric one. “O Namorico da Rita” (Rita's flirt, in English), immortalised by Amália Rodrigues, has become, in Lila's voice, “O Namorico de André” (André's flirt). “Lisboa não sejas francesa” (Lisbon, don't be French) has been turned into “Lisboa, não sejas racista” (Lisbon, don't be racist). Fado Bicha has created its own space for the experimentation of narratives that are not the normative ones and the most represented in the musical genre. In another facet, the duo do what they themselves have termed as an “LGBT archaeology of fado”, seeking to give protagonism to homosexual poets who always contributed towards the national songbook, in general, and to fado, in particular, such as the case of José Carlos Ary dos Santos.
