CelesteMariposa is a Lisbon-based project founded in 2009, dedicated to spreading the word and promoting around the world Lusophone African music from all the former Portuguese colonies: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Principe. Music that, until today, has remained almost completely unheard of in the Western world, but were naturally found within Lisbon's deep African connections. CelesteMariposa was responsible for creating the first ever compilation of music from Cape Verde, “Space Echo”, released on the major label Analog Africa (2015). The CelesteMariposa DJ set is based on one of the most complete Lusophone African music collections in existence, with a monthly residence at MusicBox (Lisbon) and Galeria Zé dos Bois (Lisbon). This record collection includes historic albums but also many ultra‐rare author editions. CelesteMariposa use cassettes, vinyl and CDs alike to construct a DJ set adaptable to either more contemplative ambiences, packed clubs or festivals, thanks to Wilson Vilares' background in the underground techno and acid house Portuguese scene. In 2009 he was one of 50 Portuguese artists to participate at the Red Bull Music Academy Taster in Lisbon. CelesteMariposa Discos is also a record label dedicated to recording the amazingly talented Lusophone African bands based in Portugal, which for many reasons have been ignored until today.
